I am Mary Waters, former Michigan State Representative, former Detroit Charter Commissioner, and life-long public servant. I am running for City Council At Large to build on our fight for our community.
For decades, I have been honored to serve our community. Since graduating from the University of Michigan, I have fought for residents and our community. I have been an activist with the AFT, DFT, and UAW. As a former vice chair of the Detroit Charter Revision Commission, I worked to protect the interests of all Detroiters. I was also elected to 3 terms in the State House of Representatives, serving as the first African American female floor leader and advocating for our community by bringing tax dollars home
Water is a human right, and I will work on the City Council to ensure that no resident is without water at any time. Our neighborhoods, ALL NEIGHBORHOODS, need an influx of economic development. I am running to fight over-taxation and to stop Detroiters losing their homes due to foreclosures. I will work with the Detroit’s Senior Citizen department to ensure seniors are well informed about the resources available to them, and that Seniors can easily apply for home repair grants.
As a breast cancer survivor, and the immediate past president of Sisters Network (a breast cancer survivors’ organization), I know how important health is to our community. Health isn’t just physical - our community has deep scars in our mental health from poverty, racism, and hopelessness. I will work hard to improve our city’s Health Department and champion the health issues that matter to you, helping to make our entire community healthier and safer.
